Heidi Dokulil

A design and architecture writer based in Sydney, Australia, I am involved in a broad sweep of projects focused on architecture, design and innovation, ideas that bring people and design together. I have honed my skills writing feature stories and books, producing talks and workshops, and interviewing influential thinkers about the meaningful ways design can improve our lives.

I began my career as a cub reporter. I worked for Interior Architecture magazine before joining Monument as assistant editor, then editor. To expand my interests, I established a design studio with art director Graeme Smith, where we worked on exhibitions including ‘Designing for the Asia Pacific’ in Brisbane and ‘Conversations of Things New’ in Sydney and Melbourne; launched the Happy Talk House design and workshop series with Liane Rossler for Art & About Sydney; and co-founded the mentorship program ‘Springboard: entrepreneurship for designers’ with funding from the Australian government. In 2026 I launched The New Set with writer and photographer, Frances Mocnik, a magazine at the nexus of all of the ideas I am passionate about: architecture, design, sustainability and travel.

As a writer, I contribute to magazines T Australia; The New York Times Style magazine, ArchitectureAU, Houses Magazine and more space, and have written three books: monographs ‘Robson Rak: Permanent Residence’ and ‘Burley Katon Halliday’, both published by Thames and Hudson, and ‘Sydney Brutalism’, published by NewSouth. I am currently curating an exhibition on Sydney brutalism with the Museum of Sydney that opens in October, 2027.
